Return to Planet SR388
Metroid: Samus Returns takes Samus Aran back to the planet SR388, revisiting the events of the original Metroid II: Return of Samus while completely rebuilding the adventure for Nintendo 3DS. Released in 2017, the game follows Samus as she is sent to SR388 to investigate and eliminate the remaining Metroids. The mission takes her deep into an alien world filled with dangerous creatures, ancient ruins and increasingly powerful Metroid forms.
While the story is based on the original Game Boy adventure, Samus Returns expands the experience considerably. New abilities, modernised combat, detailed environments and additional gameplay systems transform the classic adventure into a much more contemporary Metroid experience.
For fans of the original, it provides an opportunity to experience Samus’s mission on SR388 in a completely new visual style.
The Metroid Hunt
The central objective of Samus Returns is straightforward: find and destroy the remaining Metroids. As Samus explores deeper into SR388, she encounters different stages of the Metroid life cycle, with each form becoming more dangerous and requiring different approaches to defeat. The hunt is tied directly into the structure of the planet. Samus must explore interconnected areas, locate Metroids, collect upgrades and discover new routes as she progresses further underground.
This gives the adventure the familiar rhythm of a Metroid game: explore, discover, gain new abilities, return to previously inaccessible areas and gradually uncover more of the world. The escalating Metroid encounters also provide a strong sense of progression as Samus moves towards the deepest parts of SR388.
A Modern Remake of a Game Boy Classic
Metroid: Samus Returns is a reimagining of the 1991 Game Boy game Metroid II: Return of Samus. The original game introduced several important elements to the Metroid mythology, including the idea of Samus travelling to SR388 to eliminate the Metroid species. It also established the events that would eventually lead into Super Metroid.
Samus Returns preserves the fundamental story and setting while dramatically expanding the original experience. The 3DS version introduces detailed 3D environments, modern combat mechanics and a much more expressive version of Samus.
For collectors, this creates an interesting connection between two generations of Metroid gaming. The Metroid II: Return of Samus poster celebrates the original Game Boy adventure, while this Metroid: Samus Returns poster represents its modern Nintendo 3DS reinterpretation.
New Abilities and Modern Combat
One of the biggest differences between Samus Returns and the original Game Boy game is the way Samus moves and fights. The remake introduces free-aim functionality, allowing Samus to aim her arm cannon independently rather than being restricted to the fixed aiming directions of the original games. A melee counter also gives her a new way to deal with enemies at close range. The game introduces additional abilities too, including Aeion powers that give Samus new options during exploration and combat.
These additions make Samus Returns feel much faster and more responsive than its Game Boy predecessor while retaining the exploration and progression that define the series.
The result is a remake that respects the foundations of Metroid II while giving Samus a modern set of tools with which to explore SR388.
The Road to Metroid Dread
Samus Returns also has an important place in the modern history of the 2D Metroid series. The game was developed by MercurySteam, who would later return to develop Metroid Dread for Nintendo Switch. As a result, there is a direct creative connection between the two games. The movement, combat and visual approach developed for Samus Returns helped establish the foundation for the later adventure. Metroid Dread would take those ideas further, creating an even faster and more intense version of the traditional 2D Metroid formula.
That makes the two games particularly natural companions for a gaming wall. The Metroid Dread poster can sit alongside Samus Returns as a visual representation of the modern revival of 2D Metroid.
Samus Aran on SR388
The design of Metroid: Samus Returns captures a very different side of Samus compared with the original Game Boy game. The Nintendo 3DS artwork presents Samus in her modern Power Suit against the hostile alien environment of SR388, reflecting the game’s darker atmosphere and more detailed visual style. From the dangerous creatures inhabiting the planet to the imposing Metroid forms Samus encounters during her mission, the artwork communicates the sense of isolation and danger that runs throughout the adventure.
For fans who grew up with the original Metroid II, the key art also provides a striking reminder of just how dramatically the series evolved between the Game Boy era and Nintendo 3DS.
Design & Style
This Metroid: Samus Returns poster uses the game’s official key art as its main image, giving the design a distinctive Nintendo 3DS-era appearance. The layout follows the established Gamers Gallery gaming poster style, with the Metroid: Samus Returns title positioned above the artwork. The upper-right section contains key information about the developer, publisher, genre and original launch platform, while six colour swatches sampled directly from the main artwork sit opposite. Below the main image is a concise summary of Samus’s mission on SR388 alongside the game’s original release date. Nintendo 3DS branding completes the design at the bottom.
The result is a clean gaming print that combines the visual identity of Samus Returns with the minimalist, information-led presentation of the wider Gamers Gallery Metroid collection.
