How did this all start?
Well, seemingly not too dissimilar to you. I am a big fan of minimalist, gallery-style poster designs. I had a long wall that could fit around 12 posters, but I wanted them to be uniform. And while I saw some lovely pieces online, a lot of the games I was looking for I could not find anyone who had a consistent design that covered every game I was after. So, I decided to set about myself and start designing some.
After a fair amount of experimenting with different styles, I finally locked onto the design I used. I wanted to include key information, I wanted a colour palette featuring actual colour samples from the key art. I wanted most of my designs to not feature the logos, and instead focus on the key art (although I did deviate at times from this). Most importantly, I wanted them all the same. Same design, layout, key elements, base colour, paper type.
After printing, framing and hanging these on my wall, a visitor asked me if I could make some for them featuring different games. Then a colleague asked if I could do some for them, too. My wife suggested I tried selling them on Etsy, and The Gamers Gallery was born.
We quickly realised that Etsy is not what it once was. While sales were solid, the fee’s involved were eye-watering, Etsy insist on holding your money for months at a time, and their customer service was woeful. After 6 months or so, we made the call to close our Etsy store, and instead shifting to selling on Vinted. We found much better success with this platform, though as a registered business we had to use Vinted Pro, which makes the buying experience less appealing for our customers, and we had to put deliveries through couriers we were not happy to work with.
While we still very much do still sell on Vinted, we wanted a platform that we could showcase everything on – not worrying about relisting every single time we sold a print. A platform where we could control the margins and provide better value for our customers, control the delivery process knowing we can quickly deal with any issues, and take ownership of the whole experience. So, we set out to build a website.
And this is it. Our Gamers Gallery, now out in the wild.
I am wildly passionate about video games. I am also wildly passionate about quality control. Every single print is done to order. I use the same premium grade, 240gsm glossy photo paper for every single poster. Yes, it is much more expensive per sheet than lower grade paper, but the quality speaks for itself. The colours are more vibrant, the consistency is so much better, and once framed they look so much more premium. I use a top-of-the-range printer to produce these prints – we don’t send batch prints to faceless companies. Every print is done by us, every single one is checked to ensure the quality is right. If there is anything – minor alignment issues, any type of minor ink mark, any print crease – that goes in the recycling, and we start over.
Video games are art. As such, they invoke a passion among their consumers. And we treat them all as art and passion. Whether I like the game I am designing a poster for or not, every game is somebodies favourite. So my passion and attention to detail I put into making my Legend of Zelda Wind Waker design (which I love!) is exactly the same I put into making my Command and Conquer design (a game which I never managed to click with). This isn’t a fly-by-night, “sell them in volume”, cheap and nasty venture. This is a side-line business for me. One that allows me to brighten the rooms and walls for fellow gamers.
I price all the posters fairly and competitively. £7.99 for an A4 print, which has been meticulously designed, printed and quality checked. That price includes packaging – clear plastic, sealed cello bags, with a layer of rigid card inserted to protect your prints. Hard-backed envelopes to ensure they arrive in perfect condition. The price even includes postage costs via Royal Mail Second Class. There is no hidden costs or fees. Simple, straight-forward pricing. A3 prints are £10.99 all-in, again including design, print, quality check, packaging and postage. I even offer a 25% discount on EVERYTHING when you buy two or more (as I can ship them in one package for you).
Is it going to make me rich? Absolutely not. Is it a cool little venture that lets me connect with gamers, and provide a genuinely brilliant way for them to showcase their gaming passions prominently, while earning some pocket money to spend on more video games? Absolutely yes.
