Description

Samus Returns to 2D Metroid

Metroid Dread continues the long-running 2D Metroid series with a tense adventure that sends Samus Aran to the remote planet ZDR. Released for Nintendo Switch in 2021, the game combines the exploration, platforming and progression that have defined the series for decades with a strong emphasis on stealth, pursuit and survival.

Following the events of Metroid Fusion, Samus is sent to investigate mysterious reports concerning the Metroids and the potentially dangerous X parasite. What begins as a reconnaissance mission quickly turns into a fight for survival when Samus encounters the E.M.M.I., highly advanced robotic machines that relentlessly pursue her through restricted areas of the planet.

The result is a Metroid adventure that feels familiar while introducing a much more immediate sense of danger.

Planet ZDR

The world of Metroid Dread is centred around Planet ZDR, a vast and mysterious alien environment divided into distinct regions. As Samus explores deeper into the planet, she encounters ancient structures, hostile wildlife, dangerous machinery and remnants of a civilisation connected to the game’s story. Exploration remains fundamental to the experience. Areas that initially appear inaccessible can become reachable as Samus acquires new abilities, weapons and upgrades, encouraging players to revisit earlier locations and uncover hidden paths.

The world is also shaped by the presence of the E.M.M.I. robots. Their restricted zones transform exploration into something much more dangerous, with Samus needing to use her abilities and surroundings to evade machines that cannot be defeated through conventional means.

This combination of exploration and pursuit gives Planet ZDR a distinctive atmosphere within the Metroid series.

The E.M.M.I.

Few enemies in Metroid Dread create quite the same feeling of tension as the E.M.M.I. These imposing white robots were originally designed for exploration and research, but now hunt Samus through specific areas of ZDR. Their extraordinary speed and durability mean that Samus cannot simply confront them with her normal arsenal. Instead, encounters with the E.M.M.I. become tense sequences of movement, timing and escape. Samus must find ways through their territory while searching for the means to turn the tables on them.

The E.M.M.I. have become one of the defining visual elements of Metroid Dread, making their presence on the game’s key art an important part of the poster’s identity.

A New Chapter for 2D Metroid

Metroid Dread sits within a long lineage of 2D Metroid adventures that began with Metroid on the NES and continued through Metroid II: Return of Samus and Super Metroid. Its closest modern predecessor is Metroid: Samus Returns, the Nintendo 3DS remake of Metroid II. Both games build upon the foundations of traditional 2D Metroid while introducing modernised movement, combat and abilities.

For fans of the earlier games, a Metroid Dread poster can therefore sit naturally alongside a Super Metroid poster or the Metroid: Samus Returns poster, creating a visual connection between different generations of Samus’s adventures.

The game also forms part of the wider Metroid universe alongside the first-person Prime series, including Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which takes Samus into another new chapter of her story.

Samus Aran’s Abilities

Metroid Dread gives Samus an impressive collection of familiar and new abilities as she progresses through ZDR. The game retains essential elements of the classic Metroid formula, including the Morph Ball, Charge Beam, missiles and other suit upgrades, while introducing new movement options that make Samus faster and more agile than ever. Abilities such as the Phantom Cloak also play an important role in dealing with the E.M.M.I. and navigating the world around them. Samus can temporarily become invisible to certain threats, allowing her to move through dangerous situations without immediately being detected.

The result is a version of Samus who feels exceptionally mobile, making exploration and combat a particularly fluid part of Metroid Dread.

A Modern Metroid Classic

Metroid Dread is notable not only as a major new entry in the series, but also as a game that demonstrates how effectively the traditional Metroid formula can work in a modern setting. Its combination of exploration, backtracking, atmospheric environments, challenging combat and constant progression remains recognisably Metroid, while its fast movement and E.M.M.I. encounters give the formula a distinctly modern edge.

For collectors, the game also represents an important point in the history of the series: a major new 2D Metroid adventure arriving on Nintendo Switch nearly two decades after the release of Metroid Fusion.

This Metroid Dread poster celebrates that return with a clean gaming wall art design built around the game’s distinctive official key art.

Design & Style

This Metroid Dread poster uses the game’s official key art as the main visual, placing Samus Aran and the imposing E.M.M.I. presence at the centre of the design. The layout follows the established Gamers Gallery gaming poster style, with the Metroid Dread title positioned above the main artwork. The top-right section provides key information including the developer, publisher, genre and original launch platform, while six colour swatches sampled from the artwork sit opposite. Below the main image is a concise summary of the game alongside its original release date, with Nintendo Switch branding completing the design at the bottom.

The result is a clean, modern gaming print that captures the darker and more intense atmosphere of Metroid Dread while fitting naturally alongside the wider Metroid poster collection.
