Before Metroid Prime took Samus into three dimensions, the foundations of the series were established through three landmark 2D adventures.
The original Metroid, released on the NES, introduced Samus Aran and her mission to stop the Space Pirates from exploiting the mysterious Metroids. Exploring the hostile environments of Planet Zebes, Samus gradually builds her arsenal while uncovering new routes through an interconnected world. Metroid II: Return of Samus takes the story to SR388, where Samus is tasked with eliminating the Metroid population. Her mission eventually leads to an unexpected encounter with a Metroid hatchling, creating the relationship that becomes central to the next game. Then comes Super Metroid, returning Samus to Planet Zebes and bringing the story of the original trilogy together. The result is a sprawling SNES adventure featuring some of the most memorable environments, enemies and moments in the history of the series.
Together, the three games form the foundation of Samus Aran’s original adventures.

The stories are connected not only through their characters and locations, but through the way each adventure builds upon what came before. The relationship between Samus and the Metroid hatchling is particularly important. It begins in Metroid II and becomes one of the defining elements of Super Metroid, giving the trilogy a narrative connection that goes beyond simply being three games in the same franchise.
