Forced to survive against hostile forces, dangerous environments and the island’s dark secrets, Lara is gradually pushed beyond her limits. What begins as an archaeological expedition becomes a fight for survival that fundamentally changes the woman she will become.
The 2013 reboot went on to form the foundation of the Survivor trilogy, followed by Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
Lara Croft’s Origin Story
Tomb Raider presents a very different Lara from the confident, experienced adventurer seen in the earlier games. Stranded on Yamatai after the Endurance expedition goes disastrously wrong, she must learn to survive in an unfamiliar and hostile environment.
The island hides a mysterious history surrounding the legendary Sun Queen, Himiko, and Lara soon discovers that escaping Yamatai will be far more complicated than simply finding a way off the island.
Exploration, climbing, hunting, combat and environmental puzzles combine to create a more survival-focused interpretation of the Tomb Raider formula. Lara’s journey from inexperienced explorer to determined survivor became the defining theme of the reboot.
The Start of the Survivor Trilogy
Tomb Raider (2013) is the first chapter in the Survivor trilogy, followed by Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
The three games chart Lara’s development from an inexperienced young woman into the confident tomb raider she ultimately becomes. Rise takes Lara into the Siberian wilderness in search of the Lost City of Kitezh and the secret of immortality, while Shadow takes her to Peru as she races to prevent a catastrophic event.
