Super Mario Land – Mario’s Game Boy Debut
Released in 1989, Super Mario Land brought Mario to the Game Boy for his first dedicated handheld adventure. Rather than taking place in the familiar Mushroom Kingdom, the game introduces the new world of Sarasaland, where Mario must rescue Princess Daisy from the alien villain Tatanga.
The game retains the familiar side-scrolling platforming formula associated with Mario while introducing its own characters, enemies, environments and gameplay ideas. Mario can travel across land, underwater and through the skies, including using the Marine Pop submarine and Sky Pop aircraft during his adventure.
The Kingdom of Sarasaland
Super Mario Land takes Mario away from the Mushroom Kingdom and into the four kingdoms of Sarasaland: Birabuto, Muda, Easton and Chai.
Each kingdom offers its own distinctive environments and challenges as Mario works his way towards Tatanga and Princess Daisy. The unusual setting, unique enemies and different approach to some familiar Mario mechanics give Super Mario Land a character all of its own.
A Classic Game Boy Adventure
Super Mario Land was one of the defining early platform games for Nintendo’s Game Boy, adapting the Mario formula to a much smaller screen and a monochrome handheld display. Its compact levels and distinctive visual style helped make it a memorable part of the Game Boy library, while its unusual take on the Mario universe has given it a unique place in Nintendo history.

The Beginning of the Game Boy Mario Trilogy
Super Mario Land is the first of three connected Game Boy-era adventures represented in this collection. It was followed by Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in 1992, which introduced Wario as Mario’s rival, before Wario took the starring role in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 in 1994.
