Super Mario Land 2 – Mario’s Next Game Boy Adventure
Released in 1992, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is the second Game Boy adventure in the Super Mario Land series. This time, Mario returns to Mario Land only to discover that an intruder named Wario has taken control of his castle and the surrounding land.
To regain his castle, Mario must collect six Golden Coins scattered throughout Mario Land. Each coin is guarded by one of Wario’s minions, leading Mario through a series of distinctive worlds and challenging platforming stages before the final confrontation with Wario. Nintendo continues to include Super Mario Land 2 among its classic Game Boy titles.
The Six Golden Coins
The six Golden Coins are at the centre of Mario’s adventure. Wario has scattered the coins across Mario Land and placed them under the protection of his followers. Mario must explore the different areas of the kingdom, defeat their guardians and recover all six coins before he can enter his own castle.
The game’s structure gives Mario greater freedom to explore than the original Super Mario Land, with the six main areas providing different environments and challenges on the journey towards Wario.
The Introduction of Wario
Super Mario Land 2 is particularly significant in Mario history because it introduces Wario as Mario’s rival. Rather than simply facing another familiar Mario villain, Mario finds himself trying to reclaim his own castle from a character who has taken over Mario Land and made it his own. Wario would go on to become one of Nintendo’s most recognisable characters and eventually star in his own series of games.
Nintendo describes Super Mario Land 2 as Mario’s second handheld adventure and specifically highlights his confrontation with Wario, who captured Mario Land and turned it into his private playground.
A Game Boy Classic
Super Mario Land 2 built on the foundations of the original Super Mario Land while giving the Game Boy adventure a larger and more characterful world. Its distinctive visual style, memorable enemies, new power-ups and introduction of Wario helped make it one of the standout platformers on Nintendo’s original handheld system.
