Released for the Game Boy in 1994, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 follows Wario after his role as Mario’s rival in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.
This time, Wario is the playable character and the star of his own adventure. His goal is to steal enough treasure from the pirates of Kitchen Island to buy himself a castle bigger than Mario’s. The adventure combines side-scrolling platforming with Wario’s distinctive physical abilities and a range of transformations.
A New Hero for the Game Boy
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 represents an important transition for Nintendo’s handheld platforming games. After first appearing as the antagonist in Super Mario Land 2, Wario became the central character in his own adventure. His heavier, more aggressive approach to platforming gives the game a noticeably different feel from the traditional Mario games. Wario can shoulder-charge enemies and objects, pick up and throw enemies, and use special hats to gain abilities including Jet Wario, Bull Wario and Dragon Wario.
The Treasure of Kitchen Island
Wario’s latest scheme takes him to Kitchen Island, where he sets out to steal the pirates’ treasure and build himself the castle he has always wanted. The island is filled with themed areas, enemies, treasures and secrets as Wario works his way through the adventure. His search also brings him into conflict with Captain Syrup and the Brown Sugar Pirates, establishing characters and ideas that would become part of the Wario Land series.
The Final Chapter of the Game Boy Trilogy
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 follows Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins to complete the three-game Game Boy collection. While the game carries the Super Mario Land name, it marks a significant change from its predecessors by moving Mario out of the starring role and placing Wario at the centre of the adventure. It was also the first game to bear the Wario Land name, establishing the separate series that would follow.
