The original Shenmue introduced Ryo Hazuki and his quest for revenge after witnessing the murder of his father, Iwao, at the hands of Lan Di. Shenmue II continued the investigation, taking Ryo beyond Japan and into Hong Kong as he followed the trail surrounding Lan Di and the mysterious Phoenix Mirror.
After an eighteen-year wait, Shenmue III finally continued the story in 2019, taking Ryo and Shenhua deeper into rural China as they attempted to uncover the secrets surrounding the Phoenix Mirror. Together, the three games form one of gaming’s most unusual and memorable long-running adventures.
