Released on 19th November 2019, Shenmue III continued the story that had begun with Shenmue in 1999 and Shenmue II in 2001, arriving almost two decades after the original game. Developed by Ys Net under the direction of Yu Suzuki, Shenmue III picks up Ryo Hazuki’s story as he continues his search for Lan Di and attempts to uncover the mystery surrounding the Phoenix Mirror.
The adventure moves deeper into China, taking Ryo through rural landscapes, towns and mountain villages as he continues his investigation while training in martial arts and meeting the people who may hold clues to his father’s murder.
Ryo Hazuki’s Journey Continues
Shenmue III resumes Ryo’s quest following the events of Shenmue II, with Ryo travelling through the Chinese countryside alongside Shenhua Ling. The Phoenix Mirror remains central to the mystery, while Ryo’s search for answers leads him through the Bailu Village and beyond. Along the way, he can train, earn money through part-time jobs, play arcade games, gamble and interact with the inhabitants of the world around him.
The game retains many of the distinctive features of the earlier Shenmue titles, combining exploration, investigation, martial arts combat, Quick Time Events and everyday activities into a slower-paced adventure unlike almost anything else in gaming.
The Return of a Cult Classic
The journey from the original Shenmue to Shenmue III is one of the most unusual stories in video game history. After Shenmue II, fans waited for years to discover how Ryo’s story would continue. Shenmue III eventually became a reality through a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, allowing Yu Suzuki and his team at Ys Net to continue the story.
For fans who had been waiting since the Dreamcast era, its arrival in 2019 was a genuine gaming event. Shenmue III may have taken a different route from its predecessors, but it retained the series’ distinctive atmosphere, deliberate pacing and focus on exploration and character interaction.
