Resident Evil 4 Remake

Released in 2023, Resident Evil 4 is a ground-up reimagining of Capcom’s hugely influential 2005 survival horror game. Rather than simply reproducing the original with modern graphics, Capcom rebuilt the experience with a reworked story, modernised controls, redesigned environments and the RE ENGINE. Capcom specifically described the remake as preserving the essence of the original while providing a fresh experience for both returning fans and newcomers.

The story takes place six years after the Raccoon City incident depicted in Resident Evil 2. Leon S. Kennedy has survived the events of Raccoon City and is now working as a US government agent.

His latest assignment takes him far from the city.

The president’s daughter, Ashley Graham, has been kidnapped and traced to an isolated region of Europe. Leon is sent to locate Ashley and bring her home, but his investigation quickly reveals that the villagers are anything but ordinary. The inhabitants have been infected with Las Plagas, a parasitic organism that allows the game’s antagonists to retain a degree of intelligence and organisation. Leon’s rescue mission consequently becomes a fight against an organised biological threat rather than simply another outbreak of conventional zombies.

Leon S. Kennedy Returns

Resident Evil 4 brings Leon back as the protagonist following his transformation from rookie police officer in Resident Evil 2 into a highly trained government agent. The change in Leon’s character reflects the six-year gap between the two games. He is no longer the inexperienced officer who first arrived in Raccoon City. Instead, he has become a capable operative tasked with dealing with situations far beyond the ordinary. His mission to rescue Ashley takes him through a remote European village and into increasingly dangerous territory. Along the way, Leon encounters Luis Serra, a mysterious former researcher with knowledge of the parasites, and Ada Wong, who once again becomes entangled in Leon’s story. Ashley herself is also more than simply a rescue objective. The relationship between Leon and Ashley is an important part of the adventure, with the remake reworking their interactions and giving Ashley a more active role during sections of the game.

The result is a story that remains recognisable to fans of the 2005 original while giving its characters greater depth and a more modern presentation.

The Village, Castle and Island

Resident Evil 4’s setting is one of its defining features.

The game begins in an isolated European village surrounded by forests and farmland. The environment is immediately different from the Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City settings of the earlier games. Instead of being confined to corridors and police buildings, Leon is initially exposed to a much larger rural environment. From the village, the adventure eventually moves through the imposing castle of Ramón Salazar before reaching the island facilities controlled by the game’s antagonists.

Each location provides a different atmosphere and style of gameplay. The village introduces the threat of the Ganados and establishes the mystery surrounding Las Plagas. The castle expands the adventure with traps, puzzles, cultists and new enemies, while the island introduces more advanced military and biological threats.

The remake rebuilt these environments using the RE ENGINE, giving the locations a far greater level of detail and atmospheric lighting while retaining the distinctive structure of the original adventure.

Las Plagas and the Ganados

One of the biggest differences between Resident Evil 4 and the earlier games is the nature of its enemies. The infected villagers, known as Ganados, aren’t conventional zombies. The Las Plagas parasite allows them to retain enough intelligence to communicate, use weapons and work together.

This fundamentally changes the way Leon has to approach combat. Instead of simply dealing with slow-moving undead enemies, players can be surrounded by hostile villagers using weapons and coordinated attacks. Some infected enemies can also undergo disturbing mutations, creating additional threats as the story progresses. The remake modernises these encounters while retaining the basic identity of the original game. Enemies remain aggressive and unpredictable, forcing players to make use of Leon’s weapons, movement and surroundings.

The result is a combat system that sits between traditional survival horror and the more action-oriented direction established by the original Resident Evil 4.

A New Kind of Resident Evil

The original Resident Evil 4, released in 2005, represented a major change for the series.

It moved away from the fixed-camera presentation of the earlier games and introduced the over-the-shoulder perspective that would become hugely influential in third-person action games. PlayStation’s official retrospective describes the original as combining action, shooting and resource management in a way that helped establish the direction of future Resident Evil titles.

The 2023 remake retains this fundamental approach while modernising virtually every part of it.

Leon can move while aiming, use a knife in combat, perform contextual actions and take advantage of a more flexible control system. The remake also expands stealth, allowing Leon to quietly approach certain enemies rather than always engaging them directly. Resource management remains important. Ammunition, healing items and crafting materials all have to be managed carefully, while the game’s inventory system requires players to make decisions about what to carry. This balance between action and survival horror is a defining characteristic of Resident Evil 4.

The Merchant

One of the most memorable features carried over from the original game is the mysterious Merchant.

The Merchant appears at various points throughout Leon’s journey, providing weapons, upgrades, ammunition and other useful equipment in exchange for the game’s currency. The system adds an element of progression to the adventure. Players can decide which weapons to upgrade, which equipment to purchase and when it is worth spending their accumulated resources. The remake retains the Merchant while expanding and modernising the upgrade system. This helps create a sense of progression throughout Leon’s journey, with his equipment becoming increasingly capable as the threats around him become more dangerous.

The Merchant’s presence also provides brief moments of relief from the intensity of Leon’s journey, making him one of the most recognisable supporting characters associated with Resident Evil 4.

A Reimagined Classic

Capcom’s approach to Resident Evil 4 Remake was deliberately different from simply reproducing the 2005 game.

The story was reworked, the atmosphere became darker and the gameplay was modernised, while the fundamental structure and identity of the original remained recognisable. Capcom described the project as a remake intended to provide a fresh gameplay experience through a reworked story and modernised game feel.

This approach allows the remake to work on two levels. Players who remember the original encounter familiar locations, characters, enemies and moments, but with enough changes to keep the experience unpredictable. Meanwhile, players discovering Resident Evil 4 for the first time receive a modern survival horror adventure without needing to have played the 2005 original.

Leon Kennedy and Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 occupies a distinctive position within the wider series. It connects Leon’s story from Resident Evil 2 with a completely different setting and threat, while establishing the more action-oriented style that would influence subsequent Resident Evil games. The 2023 remake preserves that identity while bringing its characters, environments and gameplay into the modern era.

For fans of Leon Kennedy, it also represents an important point in his evolution from the rookie police officer of Resident Evil 2 into one of the series’ most recognisable protagonists.

Design & Style

This Resident Evil 4 Remake poster uses striking key art from the 2023 remake, with Leon Kennedy as the central visual focus. The Resident Evil 4 title sits above the main artwork, while the upper information panel provides key details about the game including Capcom as developer and publisher, Survival Horror as the genre and its original launch platforms. Six square colour swatches are sampled directly from the main artwork, allowing the information section to pick up the tones of the key art while maintaining the clean gallery-style appearance of the collection. Below the main image is a concise summary of Leon’s mission alongside the original release date of 24 March 2023. PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PC platform branding completes the design at the bottom, reflecting the platforms on which the remake originally launched.

The result is a clean, modern piece of Resident Evil wall art that combines Leon’s instantly recognisable character artwork with the structured visual language of a contemporary gaming print.
