Resident Evil 3 Remake

Released in 2020, Resident Evil 3 is Capcom’s reimagining of the 1999 PlayStation classic Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Built using the RE Engine that powered the Resident Evil 2 remake, the game completely recreates the story and setting of the original while introducing modern gameplay, updated character designs and a new interpretation of Jill Valentine’s escape from Raccoon City. Capcom describes the game as a fresh take on the original story and setting rather than a straightforward recreation.

The story takes place around the same period as Resident Evil 2. Raccoon City is in the grip of the T-virus outbreak, with its population rapidly becoming infected and the city descending into chaos. Jill Valentine, a former member of S.T.A.R.S., is attempting to survive the collapse while continuing to investigate Umbrella Corporation and the events surrounding the earlier Mansion Incident.

But Jill has another problem.

Umbrella has deployed Nemesis-T Type, an enormous and highly advanced biological weapon specifically designed to hunt down members of S.T.A.R.S. The creature relentlessly pursues Jill through the ruined city, making Nemesis one of the defining elements of the entire experience.

Jill Valentine and the Raccoon City Outbreak

Jill Valentine returns as the central protagonist of Resident Evil 3, having survived the Spencer Mansion incident depicted in the original Resident Evil.

Her experiences have left her convinced that Umbrella is responsible for the biological horrors spreading throughout the region. As the T-virus outbreak reaches Raccoon City, Jill finds herself caught in an increasingly desperate struggle to escape before the city is destroyed.

Unlike Resident Evil 2, which primarily follows Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield after the outbreak has taken hold, Resident Evil 3 gives players another perspective on the catastrophe. Jill’s story begins during the early stages of the outbreak and continues through the final days of Raccoon City’s collapse. Capcom’s timeline places the events across both sides of Resident Evil 2’s story.

Jill isn’t alone. Carlos Oliveira, a member of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service, becomes an important ally during the campaign, while other survivors and members of the U.B.C.S. become caught up in the unfolding disaster.

The result is a faster-moving story that focuses heavily on survival, escape and the increasingly desperate attempt to get out of Raccoon City alive.

Nemesis

Few Resident Evil villains are as immediately recognisable as Nemesis.

Unlike the ordinary zombies and mutated creatures roaming Raccoon City, Nemesis has a single purpose: eliminate the remaining S.T.A.R.S. members. Jill is therefore not simply trying to survive the outbreak; she is being actively hunted by an enemy that is considerably more powerful than almost anything else she encounters.

Nemesis is heavily armed and capable of pursuing Jill through the city, transforming familiar locations into potential danger zones. His appearance and behaviour were substantially redesigned for the remake, giving the character a more imposing and monstrous presence.

The original Resident Evil 3 established the idea of being relentlessly pursued by Nemesis, and Capcom carried that central concept into the remake. The company’s own history of the series describes the 1999 game as one built around the terror of being constantly chased, while the remake places the same idea at the heart of Jill’s modernised adventure.

That sense of pursuit is a major part of what distinguishes Resident Evil 3 from the other games in the remake series.

The Fall of Raccoon City

Resident Evil 3 gives players a different view of Raccoon City from Resident Evil 2.

Rather than focusing primarily on the Raccoon City Police Department, the game takes Jill through a wider selection of locations across the collapsing city. Streets, shops, alleys, underground areas and industrial environments all become part of the journey as the outbreak spreads.

The RE Engine allows the city to be presented with detailed environments, realistic lighting and grotesque creature designs. Capcom specifically highlighted its ability to create a photorealistic version of Raccoon City while modernising the original game’s action and gameplay systems.

This gives the remake a very different atmosphere from the enclosed corridors of the Spencer Mansion or the R.P.D. While Resident Evil 3 still contains puzzles, exploration and resource management, its story is driven by the feeling that Raccoon City itself is collapsing around Jill.

A More Action-Focused Resident Evil

Resident Evil 3 retains the survival horror foundations of the series while placing a greater emphasis on action and movement.

The remake uses an over-the-shoulder camera and modernised controls, bringing Jill much closer to the action. Players must manage ammunition and resources while dealing with zombies, mutated creatures and the constant threat posed by Nemesis.

The game also introduces an improved dodge mechanic, allowing Jill to evade incoming attacks when timed correctly. This adds another layer to encounters and gives the player more options when confronted by enemies in tight spaces. PlayStation’s official description highlights the combination of exploration, puzzle-solving and modernised action-adventure gameplay.

The main campaign was also accompanied by Resident Evil Resistance, an asymmetrical 1-versus-4 multiplayer experience included with the game. In Resistance, one player takes the role of a Mastermind while other players attempt to survive as a team.

A Modern Take on the Raccoon City Story

Resident Evil 3 Remake forms an important part of Capcom’s modern reimagining of the early Resident Evil games.

Following Resident Evil 2 Remake in 2019, the 2020 game returned players to the same outbreak from Jill Valentine’s perspective. Capcom’s own series history identifies Resident Evil 3 as the second remake in this modern run, followed by Resident Evil 4 in 2023.

The remake retains the core ingredients that made the original memorable — Jill, Raccoon City, Umbrella and Nemesis — while rebuilding the experience with modern visuals, controls and a more contemporary presentation.

Capcom reported that Resident Evil 3 had shipped more than five million units worldwide by February 2022, demonstrating the continued interest in this modern interpretation of the Raccoon City storyline.

Design & Style

This Resident Evil 3 Remake poster uses striking key art from Capcom’s 2020 reimagining as the main visual, putting the game’s distinctive interpretation of Jill Valentine and the Raccoon City outbreak at the heart of the design.

The Resident Evil 3 title sits above the main artwork, while the upper information panel provides key details about the game including Capcom as developer and publisher, Survival Horror as the genre and its original launch platforms.

Six square colour swatches are sampled directly from the main artwork, allowing the poster’s information section to reflect the colours and atmosphere of the key art.

Below the main image is a concise summary of Jill’s story alongside the original release date of 3 April 2020. PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC platform branding completes the design at the bottom, matching the platforms on which the remake originally launched.

The result is a clean gallery-style gaming poster that combines recognisable Resident Evil artwork with the structured visual language of a modern gaming print.
