Three Generations of Metroid Gameplay
The original Metroid trilogy spans three different pieces of Nintendo hardware, and each game brought its own distinctive visual identity to Samus Aran’s adventures. Metroid introduced players to the mysterious world of Planet Zebes on the NES. Its atmospheric 8-bit graphics, maze-like environments and exploration-focused gameplay established the foundations of the series. Metroid II: Return of Samus took the formula to the Game Boy, transporting Samus to the dangerous planet SR388. Despite the handheld’s monochrome display, the game created a distinctive atmosphere as Samus searched the planet for Metroids and gradually expanded her arsenal. Super Metroid then brought the series to the Super Nintendo, dramatically expanding the scale and detail of the world. Planet Zebes returned with larger environments, more sophisticated graphics and an even greater emphasis on exploration.
Together, the three gameplay posters show how the Metroid experience developed across NES, Game Boy and SNES.
The Original 2D Metroid Adventure
The three games tell a connected story while also demonstrating the evolution of the series’ gameplay.
In Metroid, Samus begins with a relatively limited arsenal and must explore Zebes to discover the weapons and abilities needed to reach increasingly dangerous areas. Metroid II changes the structure of the adventure, sending Samus into the depths of SR388 as she searches for and eliminates the planet’s remaining Metroids. Along the way, she encounters different stages of Metroid evolution and discovers new equipment. Super Metroid combines and expands these ideas into a huge interconnected version of Zebes. New abilities continually open up previously inaccessible areas, encouraging players to remember locations and return to places they could not previously reach.
The three screenshots therefore represent more than three individual games: they show the gradual development of the gameplay formula that became synonymous with Metroid.
From 8-Bit to 16-Bit
One of the most appealing aspects of this collection is seeing the visual progression between the three games.
The NES screenshot captures the stark 8-bit aesthetic of the original Metroid, while the Game Boy screenshot presents Samus’ adventure through the limited monochrome palette of Metroid II. Super Metroid completes the progression with the richer 16-bit presentation of the SNES. Its detailed environments, animated enemies and expanded colour palette give the third game a dramatically different appearance while retaining the familiar Metroid identity.
Placed together, the three posters create a visual timeline of the early series and the Nintendo hardware on which it evolved.
A Collection Built Around Gameplay
Unlike the Metroid 1–3 Key Art Poster Bundle, this collection focuses entirely on what players saw while actually playing the games. Each poster uses an authentic gameplay screenshot as its main image, making the collection particularly suited to players who remember discovering Zebes and SR388 themselves rather than simply recognising the games from their promotional artwork.
The individual Metroid gameplay poster, Metroid II: Return of Samus gameplay poster and Super Metroid gameplay poster are also available separately, but this bundle brings the three gameplay designs together as a matching collection.
Design & Style
This bundle contains three matching gameplay posters covering Metroid, Metroid II: Return of Samus and Super Metroid.
Each design places an authentic gameplay screenshot at the centre of the poster, with the game title positioned above it. The top-right information panel provides key details including developer, publisher, genre and original launch platform, while six colour swatches sampled directly from each screenshot appear in the top-left. Below each gameplay image is a concise summary of the relevant adventure and its original release information. The appropriate NES, Game Boy or Super Nintendo branding completes each design.
The different screenshots retain the distinctive appearance of their original games, while the shared layout gives the three posters a consistent appearance when displayed together.
