Released in 2006, Tomb Raider: Legend marked a new chapter for Lara Croft. Developed by Crystal Dynamics, the game returned the series to its exploration, puzzle-solving and platforming roots while introducing a more modern approach to Lara’s character and the world around her.
The adventure follows Lara as she searches for the legendary sword Excalibur, travelling across a variety of locations including Peru, Japan, Ghana, Kazakhstan, Nepal and Bolivia. Along the way, she uncovers clues connected to the disappearance of her mother and a mystery surrounding an ancient artefact.
With its cinematic presentation, memorable locations and streamlined gameplay, Legend became an important turning point for the franchise and helped establish a new era for Lara Croft.
A New Era for Lara Croft
Tomb Raider: Legend was the first main series game developed by Crystal Dynamics and represented a significant change from the darker direction of The Angel of Darkness.
The game brought back many of the elements that had made the original Tomb Raider games so popular, while giving them a contemporary presentation. Lara’s acrobatic movement, environmental puzzles and exploration were once again central to the experience.
Legend also began a new trilogy of games featuring this interpretation of Lara Croft. It was followed by Tomb Raider: Anniversary, a reimagining of the original 1996 adventure, before the trilogy concluded with Tomb Raider: Underworld. Both of these titles will make natural companion pieces to this design.
The Return of the Classic Formula
Legend successfully brought together the adventurous spirit of the original Tomb Raider games with the expectations of a new generation of players.
