Uncharted: Golden Abyss – Drake’s Portable Adventure
Uncharted: Golden Abyss takes Nathan Drake on another dangerous search for lost history and buried treasure, this time in an adventure created specifically for the PlayStation Vita. Developed by Bend Studio, Golden Abyss was designed to bring the cinematic action, exploration and treasure hunting associated with Uncharted to Sony’s handheld console. The story introduces new characters including Marisa Chase and Jason Dante, while Nolan North returns as the voice of Nathan Drake.
Released in 2011, Golden Abyss became one of the defining showcase titles for the newly launched PS Vita, demonstrating how the Uncharted formula could be adapted to a portable system.
A Search for a Lost Historical Mystery
Golden Abyss follows Drake as he becomes involved in another mystery surrounding an ancient civilisation and the promise of a valuable treasure. His investigation brings him together with fellow treasure hunter Marisa Chase and his old acquaintance Jason Dante, setting the stage for another dangerous expedition.
As with the console games, the adventure combines exploration, climbing, gunfights, puzzles and the discovery of historical clues. The story was written and directed by Bend Studio’s John Garvin, with Naughty Dog involved in helping ensure the game retained the tone and expectations of the wider Uncharted series.
Uncharted on PlayStation Vita
Golden Abyss occupies a unique place within the Uncharted series. Rather than being another PlayStation 3 instalment, it was created around the capabilities of the PlayStation Vita, incorporating touch-screen, camera and motion features into its gameplay. The result was a portable Uncharted adventure that retained the series’ emphasis on cinematic storytelling, traversal, exploration and action while giving players a new way to experience Nathan Drake’s adventures. Bend Studio specifically aimed to create a new chapter that could stand alongside the established console games.
A Unique Chapter in the Uncharted Collection
While the mainline Uncharted games follow Nathan Drake across four major console adventures, Golden Abyss gives the series a different perspective as its PlayStation Vita entry.
It makes an interesting addition to an Uncharted poster collection alongside Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, the game that began the series on PlayStation 3. For collectors looking specifically for the four main Nathan Drake console adventures, the Uncharted 1–4 Poster Bundle is also available separately.
