Shenmue Poster – The Adventure Begins in Yokosuka
Released for the Sega Dreamcast on 29th December 1999, Shenmue was unlike almost anything that had come before it. Developed by Sega AM2 and created by Yu Suzuki, the game combined martial arts combat, exploration, investigation and everyday life into a richly detailed 3D world. Set in 1986 Yokosuka, Shenmue follows Ryo Hazuki as he investigates the murder of his father, Iwao, and begins a quest for answers that would eventually span multiple games.
This Shenmue poster captures the distinctive visual style of the original Dreamcast adventure, making it a perfect piece of wall art for fans of Sega’s most ambitious console projects.
Ryo Hazuki’s Quest for Revenge
The story begins with Ryo witnessing his father’s murder at the hands of the mysterious Lan Di. Left with only questions and a mysterious connection to the Dragon Mirror, Ryo sets out to uncover the truth.
Much of Shenmue’s appeal came from the way its story existed within a living world. Ryo could explore Yokosuka, visit shops and arcades, practise martial arts, interact with its inhabitants and follow characters through their own daily routines. The combination of investigation, exploration and real-time combat helped make Shenmue a landmark Dreamcast experience and laid the foundation for the continuing story told in Shenmue II and Shenmue III.
A Dreamcast Landmark
Shenmue was designed around an unusually detailed and interactive world, featuring changing weather, a day-and-night cycle, NPC routines, fully 3D environments and a mixture of exploration and martial arts combat. It was also notable for introducing Quick Time Events into its cinematic action sequences, while giving players an unprecedented level of interaction with the world around them.
For Dreamcast fans, Shenmue remains one of the defining games of the console’s short but hugely influential lifespan. This poster celebrates that original experience and the beginning of Ryo Hazuki’s journey.
