Description

A Journey Through Two Ages

Released for the Game Boy Color in 2001, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages sends Link on an adventure unlike almost any other Zelda game. After arriving in the mysterious land of Labrynna, Link discovers that the Sorceress of Shadows, Veran, has captured Nayru, the Oracle of Ages.

With the power to travel between the past and present, Link must explore two different versions of Labrynna to restore balance and prevent Veran from carrying out her plans. The ability to move between eras is at the heart of the adventure. Locations can change dramatically depending on the time period, while actions in one era can affect what becomes possible in the other. A blocked path in the present might be accessible in the past, while solving a problem hundreds of years earlier can transform the world that Link returns to.

The result is a Zelda adventure built around exploration, puzzles and the consequences of changing history.

Labrynna, Nayru and Veran

Link’s journey begins when he encounters Impa, Zelda’s attendant, and discovers that Nayru, the Oracle of Ages, has been possessed by Veran. After taking control of Nayru’s body, Veran travels into the past and begins manipulating Labrynna’s history. Link must pursue Veran through the different eras while helping the people of Labrynna and uncovering the secrets of the mysterious land.

The story gives Oracle of Ages a stronger emphasis on puzzles and environmental problem solving, with the relationship between past and present constantly influencing Link’s progress.

The game’s cast also gives Labrynna its own identity, ensuring that this is more than simply another journey through Hyrule.

The Harp of Ages

Central to Link’s ability to move between eras is the Harp of Ages. Once obtained, it allows Link to travel through time at specific locations throughout Labrynna. As the adventure progresses, Link gains new songs that expand the ways in which he can manipulate time. These abilities become essential for solving puzzles, reaching previously inaccessible locations and progressing through the game’s dungeons.

The mechanic gives Oracle of Ages an unusual structure, with familiar areas taking on completely different characteristics depending on when Link visits them.

It also creates some of the game’s most memorable puzzles, as players must work out how an action in one era can affect the other.

Eight Essences of Time

As Link explores Labrynna, he must complete a series of dungeons and recover the Essences of Time. Each dungeon introduces its own collection of puzzles, enemies and challenges, while the surrounding world provides plenty of opportunities for exploration. Oracle of Ages places particular emphasis on puzzle solving, making the relationship between the two time periods an important part of its dungeon and overworld design.

There are also numerous secrets and optional activities scattered throughout Labrynna, including the Kinstone-style ring and trading systems that encourage players to explore beyond the main quest.

The result is a compact handheld adventure with considerably more depth than its small Game Boy Color world might initially suggest.

One Half of a Larger Adventure

Oracle of Ages was designed alongside The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, with the two games offering different adventures that can be connected through passwords. While Oracle of Ages focuses heavily on puzzles and the manipulation of time, Oracle of Seasons places greater emphasis on action and changing the seasons.

Playing the two games together reveals additional story elements, characters and challenges, making them an especially interesting pair within the Zelda series.

If you’re building a collection around both games, the The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons poster makes a natural companion to this design.
