Description

Metroid Prime – Samus Enters a New Dimension

Originally released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002, Metroid Prime took the exploration, atmosphere and progression of the classic Metroid games and reimagined them from a first-person perspective.

The adventure begins when Samus receives a distress signal from a Space Pirate frigate orbiting Tallon IV. After investigating the damaged vessel and discovering evidence of dangerous experiments involving Phazon, Samus follows her old enemy Meta Ridley to the planet below. Tallon IV becomes the centre of Samus’ investigation. The planet contains the remains of a Chozo civilisation, abandoned ruins, hostile creatures and evidence of the devastating effects of Phazon.

What follows is a journey through a vast interconnected world, with Samus gradually recovering and upgrading her equipment while uncovering the secrets hidden beneath the planet’s surface.

Exploring the World of Tallon IV

One of Metroid Prime’s greatest strengths is its world. Rather than moving through a straightforward series of levels, Samus explores interconnected regions of Tallon IV, gradually discovering how they fit together. The Chozo Ruins, Magmoor Caverns, Phendrana Drifts and Phazon Mines each have their own visual identity, atmosphere and dangers. Progression is tied closely to exploration. New weapons, abilities and upgrades allow Samus to access areas that were previously unreachable, encouraging you to remember locations and return to earlier parts of the planet.

The Scan Visor adds another dimension to exploration, allowing Samus to investigate creatures, technology, environments and the remnants of the Chozo civilisation. Information gathered during the journey gradually builds a picture of what happened to Tallon IV and why the Space Pirates are so interested in Phazon.

Samus Aran’s First-Person Adventure

Metroid Prime was a major change in perspective for the series, but it retained many of the characteristics that made the earlier games distinctive. Samus still relies on her Arm Cannon, Morph Ball and suit upgrades to navigate an interconnected world. New weapons and abilities open previously inaccessible routes, while different Visors provide new ways of examining the environment and dealing with enemies.

The first-person perspective also makes the world feel much more immediate. Instead of watching Samus from the outside, the player sees Tallon IV through her visor, from the rain falling across the Power Suit to the hostile creatures emerging from the planet’s environments.

This approach helped establish the distinctive identity of the Prime series and paved the way for Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

The Threat of Phazon

At the heart of Metroid Prime is Phazon, a mysterious and highly dangerous substance connected to the devastation of Tallon IV. The Chozo had attempted to contain the consequences of the meteor impact that brought Phazon to the planet, eventually sealing the impact crater beneath a temple. Years later, the Space Pirates discover the substance and begin experimenting with it, creating dangerous mutations and seeking ways to exploit its power. Samus’ investigation gradually reveals the scale of the threat and the connection between Phazon, the Space Pirates and the mysterious entity known as Metroid Prime.

The Phazon storyline also becomes an important thread running throughout the wider Prime series, making this first adventure the foundation for the events that follow.

Design & Style

This poster is built around the original Metroid Prime key art, placing the game’s distinctive artwork at the centre of the design. The game title sits prominently above the main image, while the top-right information section provides key details including developer, publisher, genre and original launch platform. Six colour swatches sampled directly from the artwork are positioned in the top-left, creating a visual connection with the game’s distinctive sci-fi palette. Below the main artwork is a concise summary of Samus’ mission on Tallon IV alongside the original release date. Nintendo GameCube branding and the original launch platform information complete the lower section.

The result is a clean, minimalist Metroid Prime print that retains the character of the original artwork while presenting it as contemporary gaming wall art.

If you’re building the complete Prime collection, this poster can also be displayed alongside the Metroid Prime 2: Echoes poster, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption poster and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond poster as part of the matching four-game set.
