Description
Zelda Takes the Lead
Released in 2024 for Nintendo Switch, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom offers something genuinely different from the traditional Zelda formula: Princess Zelda is the protagonist.
When mysterious rifts begin appearing throughout Hyrule, Link is among those who disappear into one of them. With the kingdom facing an unfamiliar threat, Zelda must take matters into her own hands and set out to rescue Link and restore Hyrule. Rather than simply giving Zelda the same abilities traditionally associated with Link, the game builds its gameplay around her unique powers. Armed with the mysterious Tri Rod, Zelda can create “echoes” of objects and creatures that she encounters throughout the world. These echoes become the foundation of the adventure, allowing Zelda to solve puzzles, defeat enemies and interact with the environment in imaginative ways.
The result is a Zelda adventure that feels immediately familiar while introducing a completely different way to play.
The Power of Echoes
The central mechanic of Echoes of Wisdom is the ability to create echoes of objects and creatures. After learning the echo of an object, Zelda can reproduce it when needed, opening up a huge range of possibilities. A simple wooden crate might help her reach a higher platform, while a bed can be used to create a bridge or staircase. Creatures can also be summoned to fight alongside Zelda.
This turns the game’s environments into puzzles in their own right. Instead of always looking for a specific item designed to solve a particular obstacle, players can experiment with the objects and creatures available to them. The system gives the game a playful sense of experimentation. Two players might approach the same obstacle in completely different ways, using their available echoes to find their own solution.
It’s an idea that fits particularly well with Zelda’s long history of environmental puzzles while giving the traditional top-down formula a new direction.
A Hyrule Full of Rifts
The adventure begins when strange rifts start appearing across Hyrule, creating distortions that threaten to swallow parts of the kingdom. These mysterious openings lead to the Still World, a strange realm connected to the rifts. As Zelda explores Hyrule and enters these distorted areas, she gradually uncovers the truth behind the phenomenon and the force responsible for it.
The adventure takes Zelda across familiar aspects of Hyrule as well as new environments, with dungeons, caves, towns and open areas providing plenty of opportunities for exploration. The world retains the colourful, toy-like visual style associated with modern top-down Zelda adventures, but its environments have been designed around the game’s unique mechanics.
That means even familiar Zelda concepts can be approached differently, with Zelda’s ability to create echoes constantly changing how she interacts with the world around her.
A New Kind of Zelda Adventure
Echoes of Wisdom is particularly notable because it places Zelda herself at the centre of the adventure. For decades, Princess Zelda has been one of the most important characters in the series, but traditionally her role has been connected to the story rather than controlling the main adventure. Here, Zelda is the one exploring Hyrule, solving its problems and confronting its dangers.
Her abilities also give the game a different rhythm from traditional Link-focused Zelda games. Rather than relying primarily on a conventional collection of weapons and equipment, Zelda’s powers encourage experimentation and creativity. The game still contains many of the familiar ingredients that define the series: exploration, puzzles, dungeons, secrets, enemies and a colourful fantasy world.
But by changing who the player controls and how they interact with that world, Nintendo creates an adventure that feels distinct from the games that came before it.
From A Link Between Worlds to Echoes of Wisdom
Echoes of Wisdom belongs to the same modern top-down Zelda tradition as The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, making the two designs particularly natural companions. A Link Between Worlds revisited the world and ideas of A Link to the Past while introducing its own mechanics, most notably Link’s ability to merge into walls and move through the world as a painting. Echoes of Wisdom takes a similarly familiar Zelda framework and experiments with a completely different central ability.
Both games demonstrate how Nintendo has continued to evolve the top-down Zelda formula without abandoning its core ingredients.
The connection goes further back to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, whose SNES world and gameplay traditions have influenced several later Zelda adventures. Echoes of Wisdom isn’t a remake or direct continuation, but it shares that same foundation of exploration, puzzles, dungeons and discovery.
Together, the three posters make an interesting visual representation of how the classic top-down Zelda style has developed across different generations of Nintendo hardware.
Nintendo Switch Zelda
Echoes of Wisdom was developed specifically for Nintendo Switch, using the console’s hardware to present its miniature, colourful interpretation of Hyrule. Its distinctive visual style gives the characters and environments the appearance of detailed miniature models, creating a world that feels playful without losing the sense of adventure that defines the Zelda series.
The Switch also makes the game part of a particularly interesting period for Zelda. Alongside the large-scale open-world adventures Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Echoes of Wisdom demonstrates that Nintendo continues to support the traditional top-down style of Zelda as well.
It therefore sits comfortably alongside both the classic and modern sides of the franchise, making it a particularly appealing design for a broader Zelda collection.
