Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a ground-up reimagining of Lara Croft’s original 1996 adventure. Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, the game brings Lara’s first expedition into a modern setting while retaining the spirit and atmosphere of the classic Tomb Raider.
The adventure takes Lara across the jungles of Peru, the ancient ruins of Greece, the deserts of Egypt and a mysterious Mediterranean island as she searches for the scattered pieces of the powerful Scion artefact. The environments have been significantly expanded, with exploration, combat and puzzles all redesigned around modern gameplay.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for release on 12 February 2027, making it one of the most anticipated new chapters in Lara Croft’s long-running history.
Where the Legend Began
The original Tomb Raider introduced Lara Croft to the world in 1996, sending her across Peru, Greece, Egypt and Atlantis in search of the Scion.
Legacy of Atlantis revisits that foundational adventure while expanding the locations and reworking their puzzles and traversal for a modern audience. Familiar moments are being reimagined rather than simply reproduced, with environments designed as larger, more connected spaces that offer additional opportunities for exploration.
The game also introduces new elements and story connections while aiming to preserve the sense of discovery that defined Lara’s earliest adventure.
A New Take on Classic Lara Croft
Legacy of Atlantis sits in an interesting position within the Tomb Raider series. It returns to Lara’s original adventure, but it isn’t simply a remaster of the 1996 game.
Built using Unreal Engine 5, the game combines modern visuals and gameplay with locations, characters and moments inspired by Lara’s first adventure. The result is intended to introduce a new generation to the story while giving long-time Tomb Raider fans a fresh interpretation of a game they already know.
