Released in 1999, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation was the fourth main instalment in the original Tomb Raider series and took Lara Croft on an adventure deep into the ancient world of Egypt.
After discovering the tomb of the Egyptian god Set, Lara inadvertently unleashes an ancient evil and finds herself racing across Egypt to undo the consequences of her actions. What follows is one of the series’ most atmospheric adventures, taking Lara through ancient tombs, temples, deserts and archaeological sites as she attempts to prevent Set from returning to power.
The game placed a particularly strong emphasis on exploration and puzzle-solving, with sprawling environments that often connected together to form a much larger journey. Lara could return to previous areas, discover new routes and use items and clues collected throughout her expedition.

The Last Revelation and Ancient Egypt
Egypt had already appeared throughout earlier Tomb Raider adventures, but The Last Revelation made it the centrepiece of the entire game.

The environments give the game a strong sense of archaeological discovery while maintaining the danger and mystery that had become synonymous with Tomb Raider.
The story also draws heavily on Egyptian mythology, with Set playing a central role in Lara’s journey. The result is an adventure that feels darker and more mysterious than some of the earlier games.

The Classic Lara Croft Era
By the time The Last Revelation was released, Lara Croft had become one of the most recognisable characters in gaming.
The game continued the formula established by the original Tomb Raider: exploration, platforming, environmental puzzles, hidden secrets and combat, all wrapped around a globe-spanning archaeological adventure.
It also represented an important point in the original series. Following Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider II and Tomb Raider III, The Last Revelation demonstrated how far Core Design had developed the formula while retaining the atmosphere and gameplay that made the early games so memorable.
The game would ultimately become the final mainline Tomb Raider adventure released during the original PlayStation era.
