The Streets Are Under Threat Again
Released for the Sega Mega Drive in 1994, Streets of Rage 3 continued the story of Sega’s acclaimed side-scrolling beat ’em up series.
Following the events of Streets of Rage 2, a new criminal organisation known as the Syndicate is once again threatening Wood Oak City. This time, however, the threat goes far beyond street gangs and organised crime. A dangerous plan involving advanced technology and a series of replacements threatens to throw the city into chaos. Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding return to action, joined by Skate from Streets of Rage 2 and newcomer Dr Gilbert Zan. Together, the four heroes must fight their way through the city and uncover the Syndicate’s plans before it is too late.
Streets of Rage 3 retained the core side-scrolling action that had defined the series while introducing new mechanics, characters and gameplay features.
Axel, Blaze, Skate and Dr Gilbert
Streets of Rage 3 brings back three familiar faces while introducing a new playable character to the series. Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding once again return as two of the game’s central fighters, while Skate brings his speed and agility back from Streets of Rage 2. The fourth character is Dr Gilbert Zan, a cybernetics expert who becomes involved in the fight against the Syndicate.
Each character offers their own strengths and fighting style, giving players several different ways to approach the game’s stages and enemies.
The return of the established characters also gives Streets of Rage 3 a strong connection to the two games that came before it, while its new characters and mechanics give the series room to evolve.
A More Advanced Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 3 pushed the series further with a number of gameplay changes. Players could make greater use of techniques such as running attacks and chargeable special moves, while the introduction of additional movement options gave the combat a different feel from the earlier games. The game also introduced new environments and enemies as the story moved through Wood Oak City and beyond. Depending on the player’s actions, Streets of Rage 3 could also feature different routes and endings, giving the game more variation than its predecessors.
Despite these changes, the familiar Streets of Rage formula remained intact: choose your fighter, head into the streets and fight your way through wave after wave of enemies.
The Final Mega Drive Chapter
Streets of Rage 3 was the final main entry in the original Mega Drive trilogy.
The series had begun with Streets of Rage in 1991 before Streets of Rage 2 expanded and refined the formula in 1992. Streets of Rage 3 brought the original trilogy to a close with a more ambitious story and further changes to the gameplay.
For fans of Sega’s 16-bit era, the three games represent an important part of the Mega Drive’s beat ’em up legacy. The series would eventually return many years later with Streets of Rage 4, continuing the story while retaining the distinctive spirit of the original trilogy.
